Matheus Rocha Pitta

Born in Tiradentes, Brazil, Matheus Rocha Pitta (1980) works with photography, sculpture, video and installations. His body of work harbors a deep fascination with dissecting and disrupting contemporary systems of exchange. Through his practice, he uncovers long-lost customs, narratives, and gestures, offering a novel perspective on current challenges like climate change threats, the historical context of Brazilian colonization, and the heavy-handed control of symbols and signs. Through a lexicon of gestures, he investigates the profound relationship between control, communication, and the human physique, with significant ethical overtones. His work has been shown at the São Paulo (2010), Taipei (2014) and Cuenca (2018) Biennials; Fondazione Morra-Greco, Naples (2013), Castello di Rivoli, Torino (2017), and Kunstverein in Hamburg (2020), among others. Lives and works in Berlin.
